Mike Potters Report AMY
“RYDES” TO
THE RESCUE Following
an eleventh hour hitch to the line up of team One of Shropshire which led to the
call-up of Amy Ryder from the second team, Shropshire pulled off a truly
dazzling display by reversing last years final result of the competition by
defeating holders the Isle of Man by 2 shots and scooped the £100 prize money
& Champions shield at Widnes Rec. Centre. Team captain, Mabel Owen was
almost left speech-less as her troops, Cheryl Caswell, Sally Clee, Abi Bradburn
& Amy Ryder disposed of their opposition winning their four players, 11 up
round robin group in style to book their place in the final. Team
Two(Carol Groom(capt), Chelsea Gregory, Vanessa Medlicott, Louise Potter &
Kelly Baugh) along with team Three(Jackie Rutter(capt),Rachel Davies, Nicola
Faulkner, Jodie Rutter & Chloe Wilson), playing on another green, gained
valuable experience and showed great promise for the future, often showing
flashes of brilliance as they enjoyed the atmosphere of playing in a major
competition. In the final where the teams transferred to a third green, the
Shropshire team, followed by a coach load of support suffered an early set back
as Sally struggled with the weight change as she slumped to an 11-3 defeat. As
family & friends tried to comfort Sally’s obvious devastation, the perfect
tonic was delivered by Amy as she cancelled the early deficit, finishing from
8-3 to win 11-3 followed, within seconds by Abi as she ran out 11-4 from 7-4.
That left everyone clambering to find out how the final player on the green,
Cheryl was faring. The news was not good as Cheryl trailed 1-5 & 3-8 before
she doubled(5-8) to give the team an unassailable lead before dipping out
6-11. After the 5 matches, the selectors faith were rewarded as both Amy
and Abi Bradburn both remained unbeaten during the day’s events.
Ecstatic team captains, selectors and supporters were quick to congratulate all
12 squad members of Shropshire for their efforts helping the county achieve
it’s first win in the event. Ladies President, Joyce Barnes gave gifts
to all players and perhaps Carol Groom had received some inside information as
she presented a memento to each girl, an individually engraved medal to
mark the occasion.
